Marigolds are dicots. Monocots are grasses, corn, etc. Monocots have parallel veins and do not grow very large in diameter.

A sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a flowering annual and is a dicot.

  • Monocot: perennial bulb plant with petals in groups of 3. Ex.: tulip, daffodil, iris
  • Dicot: annual seed plant with petals in groups of 4 or 5. Ex: sunflower, zinna, petunia.
