The word appear, though it seems to have multiple words in it, is not technically a compound word. Compound words are usually made when people start using two words together so much that they morph together over time into a new word. In this case, the word isn't made up of smaller words.

Compound word are those which are made up of two word which have a meaning on their own which compliment each other. Common examples are T firefly, secondhand, softball, childlike, crosstown, redhead, keyboard, makeup, notebook; the hyphenated form, such as daughter-in-law, master-at-arms, over-the-counter. Although the "appear" seems to contain a word (either pear or ear, the initial ap or app is not a word so it fails that test and is not a compound word. The etymology of the word (a review of where word originated) indicates that appear is derived from Latin . Specifically from the Latin apparere, from ad- ‘toward’ + parere‘come into view.’ which was adopted into French and later English as a single, not compound, word.
