Non-Polar If you want to know whether or not something is polar or non-polar, just ask yourself if it would mix with water.

Water is a polar molecule and if a substance is polar, it will dissolve. Non-polar substances will not dissolve in water respectively. The saying in chemistry is like dissolves like.

Wax is does not mix with water because it is a lipid (all lipids are non-polar).

Wax is hydrophobic meaning that is would have to be non-polar because of the polarity of water.

Nonpolar. The formula of a wax is CnH2n+2 where n is a number in the subscript. So, if you draw out the Lewis structure, it will always be nonpolar.

Candle wax consists mainly of hydrocarbons which are non-polar substances (and not ionic at all). Thus, the predominant bonding interaction in candle wax would be van der Waals interactions.
