Woods that are bad for guinea pigs are Pine wood and Ceder wood.

Here are some of the things to avoid if you are building your own hutch or guinea pig cage:

  • Chicken wire (guinea pig will chew it and cause mouth problems)
  • Chemicals
  • Treated wood (they contain chemicals)
  • Painted metal
  • Sweet smelling chippings. These have chemicals inside them that give the nice smell. They are poisonous to the guinea pig.

** Note: Please do not use wire flooring of any kind as the base of your cage. I recommend you use corflute as the base of you cage. It is a cheap and easy to use waterproof plastic.

If you are going to build your own guinea pig hutch or cage then you should use the following tips:

  • If you must use wire cage then use welded wire instead of chicken wire. It is safer for the guinea pig and won't cause as many problems.
  • Use wood chippings for the bedding
  • Use hay or straw for the bedding also. These things will give the guinea pig something soft and comfortable to lie on.
  • Another good idea for bedding is aspen. This is a hardwood, so it is safe for guinea pigs.
  • You can use any wooden chippings that are natural and biodegradable. Keep things as natural as possible.
  • You can also use recycled paper if you want. This is very absorbent.
  • Soil is another alternative if you have a garden and recycle or compost waste. This is inexpensive and works great.

I hope this helps
