For the biological survival of the human species, civilization is not technically needed as such; however, civilization may be important for the advancement of the human species to a higher evolutionary level.

Civilisation can be seen as an advantage as it allows for groups of people to organise tasks which help us design better tools to survive. For example infrastructure such as reservoirs reduces the need to walk to a river every day for drinking water, leaving more time for greater medical care to be developed.

To summarise, civilization is not necessary, but creates an advantage for the survival of humanity in comparison to other species.
