Best Answer

No, cocaïne an alkaloid derived from the leaves of the coca plant is a powerful and highly addictive stimulant of the nervous system is not an opiate. Opiates are constituents derived from the latex sap of poppies named papaver somniferum, because their effect is sedative.

The principal active constituent of opium is morphine, a powerful pain killer and strongly addictive; Codeine, a weaker sedative and pain killer is useful for soothing cough. The some 25 other substances present in opium do not have the sedative effect and are not considered as opiates, but substances synthesised from opium extracts which are sedative and addictive but have little effect on the human central nervous system are also classified as opiates.
