Corrosion is the reaction of air with metal, in the presence of water ro water vapor, creating a physical change to the metal in the form of a new substance "rust". Rust itself is the result of the air and the metal with water which is then called an "oxide", a chemical name for the material produced when oxygen is one of the parts of the new compound; i.e., ethylene + oxygen = ethylene oxide
