any material will absorb heat by conduction...

If you're wondering why cotton isn't the best type of clothing to wear in the winter, this is because cotton is not a good insulator. Materials such as fleece or wool will better trap your body's heat, and better help keep you warm. In addition you don't want to get wet while wearing cotton in cold weather. Water will conduct the heat away from your body very quickly. Wool, however, keeps a lot of it's insulative properties even if wet (I think approx 50%)

Regardless getting wet, when you are out in the cold weather is a bad idea and a fast way to become hypothermic. Also, wearing cotton doesn't help nearly as much as wool or fleece in cold situations.

Like all known solids, cotton will conduct heat. Since it tends to be rather fluffy in its raw form, it also tends to make a pretty good insulator because of all the air pockets within it. That doesn't mean it won't conduct heat, it just won't do it very fast. Once cotton is spun into thread and made into cloth it isn't quite as good an insulator, but still pretty good.

The material is of little or no consequences,

the "comfort" of cotton is that it wicks sweat away from the body,

cooling you by evaporation while keeping you relatively dry.

yes, but much much much less than denim and other favrics. you should wear cotton on a hot day, as seeing that it will keep you cool.

NO, it is not a good conductor of heat.

Is graphite a good conductor of heat?

Yes, graphite is a good conductor of heat due to its layered structure that allows heat to easily pass through. The delocalized electrons in graphite also contribute to its ability to conduct heat efficiently.

Is cotton wool a good conductor of heat?

its a good insulator, meaning that yes, it is a good non-conductor. Materials that insulate heat, eg wool, cotton etc, are also by definition good electrical insulators. Good conductors would include most metals, which you may have noticed are bad insulators. you wouldn't wear metal underwear anyway!
