Organic chemistry is defined as the study of compounds containing carbon. Further, at least one of the carbon atoms is bonded to an atom of another type-commonly Nitrogen, Hydrogen, or Oxygen.

However, in this case, a diamond is a mineral, and it is in fact NOT considered organic. They are pure carbon arranged in a tetrahedral lattice structure, bonded to nothing but other carbon atoms.

A diamond is an allotrope of carbon-meaning that the carbon atoms found in it are in a different form than that generally found in other forms of carbon (Such as coal, graphite, or fullerenes.) Additionally, diamonds do not meet any of the other traits of organic compounds-flammability, solubility in nonpolar solvents, etc. Specifically, any mineral is inorganic.

Are diamonds considered organic?

No, diamonds are not considered organic because they are formed from inorganic carbon material under high pressure and temperature deep within the Earth's mantle.

Are gemstones organic?

Gemstones can be either organic or inorganic. Organic gemstones, such as pearls and amber, are formed from biological processes, while inorganic gemstones, like diamonds and sapphires, are formed through geological processes involving minerals. The distinction lies in their origin, with organic gemstones deriving from living organisms and inorganic ones arising from the Earth's crust.

Can we plant a DNA to a plant or animal so that it would produce diamonds?

Diamonds are not organic and production of manufactured diamonds can already be accomplished through inorganic methods. As complex as it would be to genetically engineer an organic system that could produce diamonds...the cost, even if it was successful, would not be worth the effort.
