It's always safest to completely avoid caffeine. However, according to my physician and the American Pregnancy Association, moderate caffeine consumption is ok. This is defined as between 150-300 mg a day. Keep in mind this is still debated in the medical community, and some experts think even 150 mg a day is too much. A 6 oz cup of black tea like earl grey is said to have about 45 mg of caffeine, so it is technically in what most would consider the safe range. Keep in mind that even decaffeinated tea still has some caffeine in it, so just switching to that is not a good solution. I allow myself to relax with one cup of earl grey about once a week and on a day that I don't have any chocolate (an ounce of dark chocolate has about 26 mg caffeine). While pregnant make sure you do your research and watch your portion sizes, otherwise you could be putting yourself at risk for preterm birth and a low birth weight baby. I got my information from my doctor and from the American Pregnancy Association's web site.
