∙ 13y agoEthical hacking can come in two forms: 1) penetration testing where someone is requested by an organization to attempt to hack into their systems to test their security measures and mechanisms. 2) testing software , especially operating systems and networking applications , taking them apart, reverse engineering, etc. to identify vulnerabilities in order to develop patches and protections. If the system or software owner ask you to do the hacking, it is truly ethical and "white hat"
The reality is that most people who think of themselves as "white hat" ethical hackers are really Grey Hat or even really "black hat".
A grey hat, in the hacking community, refers to a skilled hacker whose activities fall somewhere between white and black hat hackers on a variety of spectrums. It may relate to whether they sometimes arguably act illegally, though in good will, or to how they disclose vulnerabilities. They usually do not hack for personal gain or have malicious intentions, but may be prepared to technically commit crimes during the course of their technological exploits in order to achieve better security. Since most hackers are not nearly as skilled as they think they are, they frequently do harm while hacking,perhaps with out even knowing it - unintentional, but harm nevertheless. Once you start causing harm, you have probably crossed over into the category of "black hat" even if you didn't mean to.
There are continuing arguments over whether grey hat hacking really qualifies as "ethical hacking", but those certified as ethical hackers are taught that unless they are authorized by the owner to hack a system, it is NOT ETHICAL hacking. Perhaps the question should be rephrased as "Can Grey Hat hacking be justified?"
