Some kids have problems coping with online school because it requires a lot of self-starting. Far too many programs out there right now just hand the kid all the materials and let him figure it out on his own schedule. That's great for kids who are really motivated, but that seldom works for kids who fell behind in the first place because of a lack of motivation. I've heard that Fieldstone ( http://www.fieldstoneacademy.org/virtual ) has a program with live courses that would demand a bit more accountability form the students. I'm sure there are others, I just haven't been able to do the research.

∙ 14y agoThe sad thing about home schooling is that there are certain areas where you lose a bit of quality in the education. There are just some subjects, like history and math, where having a trained teacher really makes a big difference. It's also usually unreasonable to expect a parent to be an expert in all subjects. There are some things that help supplement the experience. For instance, I know you can go to ( http://www.fieldstoneacademy.org/virtual ) and they have live online classes to supplement homeschooling and stuff like that. I'm sure if you look around there are others, that's just one my friend took and he said it was pretty good.

I dunno, summer school has always been a pain in the neck. I'm actually really glad to see some alternatives opening up, although I don't think people know much about them. There's actually several programs out there now where students can take courses online form home to make up the credits. I know that BYU Independent Study ( http:/ce.byu.edu/is/site ) has courses it just sends to high schoolers and they just work through it on their own time. Or Fieldstone Academy ( http:/www.fieldstoneacademy.org/virtual ) has live online courses if the kid needs more of a personal touch. I'm sure there are even more than that out there. I would suppose you should just be looking to find one that fits your needs. But I would have to say that most of them are still better than summer school.
