Some say they are safe, others say they are not safe, and others say the safety of GMOs is not known. Since long-term human or animal studies were not done before they were introduced into the food chain, the safety of GMO foods is not actually known. There is some evidence that the GMOs, the herbicides used on them, and/or the substance produced in certain genetically engineered crops does cause health issues in humans.

Genetically modified food is food that has had new proteins or transgenic proteins incorporated into their structure, giving them more favorable characteristics. Genetically modified soy for example, which accounts for approximately 90% of the soy grown in the United States, is more resistant to herbicides and pests. However, there is much concern over the long-term effects associated with the consumption of these genetically modified foods. According to an article in the April 2009 issue of Toxicological Sciences, food allergy is a potential risk associated with use of transgenic proteins in crops. However, it is difficult to comment on the long-term effects of genetically modified food; long-term, large scale studies are needed.

Some say they aren't dangerous at all. The FDA says they are "substantially equivalent" to non-GMO foods. There were NO long term studies done on humans before GMO foods were sold commercially, and some long-term animal studies showed that GMO foods are dangerous to health; however, those studies were all debunked by most, but not all, scientists and governmental agencies as not being good studies. Some doctors have recommended their patients avoid GMO foods, and they claim that the health of patients who do avoid GMO foods experience better health.

To make this short, many believe genetically engineered foods are dangerous to health, but it has not been proven one way or the other.

How does genetically modified food help the world?

Almost all of the food we eat is genetically modified, originally by selective breeding and recently, in addition, by direct manipulation of DNA. Genetic modification can make food more abundant, more nutritious, more resistant to disease, more tolerant of harsh environmental conditions, and easier to pack and ship. It can also render the modified plants sterile so farmers cannot plant their seeds and must buy new seeds every year from the manufacturer.
