Dogs and many other canines eat grapes when they are in season. The grape scare stems from raisin toxicity by a few small (glutinous) pets who have eaten pounds of raisins while their owners we not keeping watch on them. Overeating anything can cause toxicity/digestive problems. Wild animals eat grapes and wolves/coyotes in turn eat those Bunnies, gophers and even skunks (with the grapes in their stomachs) Coyotes can be seen eating wild grapes off the vine along country roads on warm fall evenings.

While renal failure is possible from large amounts it is not known whether it is from the fruit or the chemicals on the fruit or even a fungus. Don't panic if your dog eats a grape or two.
