What is grendel and grendel's mother's motives?

HE wants to disturb and destory people and their properties. Grendel wants to find out the meaning of his life. He is lonely, there is no one he can talk to, and he wants to know why he is as he is.

Grendel's motives for killing are unclear, although it is speculated that he was motivated by either jealousy or greed. Grendel's mother is motivated to kill in vengeance for the death of her son.

I believe that it's vengeance. The mead-hall was a place of joy and release for the Danes. I'd imagine there were shouts of laughter and joy coming from it. Also the song being played. Grendel was from Cain's clan... outcasted by God. Tales of God's mastery and creation were probably the last thing he wanted to hear. Basically, they bugged him! :)

Grendel is motivated by his isolation and resentment towards humans for excluding him. Grendel's mother seeks revenge for her son's death and is driven by maternal instinct to protect her kin. Both characters act out of a sense of injustice and a desire for retribution.
