A 2.83 is a C+.

But it really depends on the college. Sadly, not all colleges accept that score however you're more likely to get into a communty college. If your ACT score is high enough then you may be able to get into the college of your choice.

For example if the college accepts scores of 17-23 and you make a 24 then yes having a 2.83 is okay.

But if you make an 18 or even a 16 it'd be much harder to get into the college of your choice.

Colleges asks for GPAs because it gives them an example of what your grades would be in college. Colleges tend to compete with each to be the best; they want students who are very smart and have a lot of potential to become successful to represent their school.

Although your grade point average don't always determine that it does make a difference, in college, and in life.
