Hi

I'm only 16 but I've been researching it a lot. It's basically like a giant lightning rod. As the rocket travels upward a thin wire is stretched out below. This causes the lightning to be attracted to the rocket and strike it, and since the wire is connected to the ground it travels through the wire to the ground.

Heat lightning is lightning from a distant thunderstorm, generally too far away to hear the thunder. It is usually concealed within the clouds of the thunderstorm, so it is seen as flashes of light; the bolts themselves cannot be seen directly.

How does volcanic activity change the level of gases in the air?

When a volcano erupts, it releases many gasses into the air, but most of it is water vapor. Other gasses include CO2 and hydrogen. Also an interesting side note, if you Google "volcanic lightning" you will see that the lightning produced by volcanoes is a different color than regular lightning. This is because lightning is produced within the different gasses (other than oxygen, which is blue lightning).

What is sheet or heat lightning?

Sheet lightning and heat lightning are descriptive terms rather than scientific. Sheet lighting is cloud to cloud lightning that is viewed from such a distance that there is no sound. Why does thundering occur with out lightning?

While lightning produces very high temperatures, the amount of air it heats is fairly small. In most cases a bolt of lightning is a few miles away, too far away to feel the heat. People have felt the heat from lightning, but only when it struck dangerously close.

Is fork lightning more dangerous than sheet lightning?

Sheet lightning, or more accurately intracloud lightning is the same as lightning that hits the ground, the only difference is that it is within the cloud. They are no different apart from that. They are the exact same thing, except one would take a different path. They are both dangerous.
