On the Assignment submissions page, sort the assignments by Last modified (Teacher) by clicking on the column title. Assignments which have been graded have Update in the status column, whereas those that haven't been graded have Grade in the status column.
When in college you don't have to go to class or do the assignments they give you but it is recommended so you will know what to do when they give you tests as that is what you are graded on.

School types of courses mean they are structured. The projects and assignments are probably graded and feedback is served to the individuals taking the course.
I would have to say effort. If it was just for performance, how would the teacher know if the student understands what they are suppose to learn?.

The basic college level, creative writing classes aren't much tougher than what you experience in high school. The class is meant to open students up to writing and get prepared for the much writing they do in college. You should expect assignments that are more challenging than high school. There can be a variety of assignment. There can be short stories, poetry. Expect to have your assignments reviewed, graded and revised. These are exercise to get you to become a better writer.
