I wouldn't necessarily call it a good thing, but it's also not bad. If he was flirting with you while he was still dating his previous girlfriend, then he obviously finds you attractive. By denying that he likes you, he's either taking the time to get over his last girlfriend, or he's trying to tell you that he's more interested in a hookup than a girlfriend. See how long his other relationships have lasted, and how long he waited before getting into (or trying) another relationship. This should answer your question.
