i don't know that there are necessarily four categories but you definitely need to split them into light and dark at least. I group mine into black\navy, whites that can be bleached, lights, and bue/green. i have alot of jeans so i wash them together. also i never wash towels with my clothes. i wash everything except the towels in cold water. it saves on your water bill and prevents shrinkage or fading. but towels need hot water in my opinion.
