Is it legal to carry a sword in Tennessee?

Tennessee state law makes it unlawful to carry any blade of more than 4 inches with the "intent to go armed" (§39-17-1307, this also covers guns and clubs). This last part makes it legal to carry swords for activities in which the weapon is not actually intended to be used for "offense or defense" as in recreation events, sales, displays, collections and theatrics and to and from said events. Note that if you act in an indecent or unlawful manner you may have other statutes ruled against you.

No it is NOT. In TN you can carry a knife only if the blade is no longer than 4". Does not matter if it is in the scabbard or not. This law is generally to allow one to carry a reasonable pocket knife and not to carry a edged weapon for self protection. TN has a Handgun Permit law that only allows for the carrying of a pistol for self defense.

You can buy and own a sword but not carry it in public. There is obviously the exceptions of public events such as military or rein-actor but generally speaking if you walk down the street with a sword on your hip you need to expect to be arrested or at least stopped and questioned.

Addendum: As of July 1, 2014, TN has repealed the 4" knife ban, as well as the bans on switchblades. As the state law still has no set ruling on what length edged weapon constitutes the difference between a knife and a sword in TN (or at least none widely accessible), one could HYPOTHETICALLY open carry a sword. This is supported by a comment by State Representative Vance Dennis who, when asked about swords replied, "I suppose you could. It might be a little cumbersome."
