Is it necessary to know about first aid?

Yes, it is. Besides being able to possibly save someone else's life, you are able to treat any minor injuries that may occur to yourself, and you will also have the ability to help stop more serious conditions (such as severe bleeding, etc.). While much of first aid is common sense, a first aid course would be a great thing to take, both for your own sake and for the chance to be able to save someone's life one day.

If you were hurt or injured you would want someone to help you and protect you when you cant do it your self. That's why you should know first aid. If you are level headed and calm when everyone is in a crisis around you, you don't turn your back on a challenge you face up to it.

Well then maybe you need to take first aid, it gives you the confidence to act when others can't, knowledge is power and skills are the tools. Learn to make a difference in the life of a complete stranger, learn first aid. You don't need to be a paramedic or a first responder or fire fighter to safe a life. You do need to learn what to do and how to do it. There is no greater gift in the world than the ability to help someone in need.

It was December 23rd at 6:30 at night and about -25 and windy cold. I noticed a vehicle parked to the side of the road with the park lights on and motor running half in and half out of a small snow bank. It didn't look right for that area of town at that time of night. I drove over to the vehicle and parked behind it with my lights on and walked up to the driver's side window.

Slumped over the wheel was a young lady about 23 years old, the window was up, door locked and I could see the car was still in gear. I knocked on the window and they young lady moved slowly almost like she was drunk. I got her to roll her window down she had a great deal of trouble with the window crank. Once the window was open I could smell a sickly sweet odour from her breath.

Because of my first aid training and experience I knew right away she was on the edge of a diabetic comma and going into diabetic shock. I called for the paramedics and managed to get the door open to secure the vehicle and stabilize her till the ambulance crew arrived. I was later advised that had I not called when I did she wouldn't have enjoyed her Christmas with her family. True story
