There are no laws about what ages of friends a person can have.

But the years between 14 and 18 are pretty long ones in terms of maturity--much longer than between, say, 22 and 26. It might be wiser for both parties to date someone closer to their own age.

AnswerThis kind of discussion can go around and around with some saying it's OK, while others may say no too much of an age gap. I am seven years older than my wife. My father was six years older than my mother. However, the two relationships did not occur until the late 20s and early 30s. This is more acceptable to most, because of the maturity factor. A four year difference at the age of 14 and 18 is not so acceptable to most because experience and observation dictate differently. I will admit that successful relationships are particular to the two involved. In other words, their value system (attitudes and beliefs) and ethics (what is carried out in action based on those values). Still, in most every case that I have been privy to, relationships that span four years within this age group do not work. In fact, it can lead to major problems for all concerned. When I say all concerned I mean this. Young individuals within this age bracket - in most cases - do not realize how what they do or do not do affects others who surround them. It is like dropping a pebble in a pond. It creates a ripple, and that ripple fans out and affects the whole pond, even if it's ever so slightly. When things go wrong, it affects the two involved in the relationship in addition; family and friends and possibly others within extended groups. I believe you can understand what I am saying. If the one asking this question is one of the two (the 14 year old or 18 year old), and you do not understand what I am saying, you really do not belong in this type of relationship. What I am giving is just a personal opinion, and you can do with it as you please. Nonetheless, be aware what the law may say. If things go wrong in a big way, you have a situation between an adult and a minor. I am not a lawyer but I would imagine the State would dictate the difference. I understand the feelings involved, and I know it is a very emotional situation when you really like someone or think that you are in love. However, please think of the long range affects and how it could affect the rest of your life. I just do not think its a good idea. Others may have a different opinion which they are welcome to present.

soccer1993girls Opinion:i think that is fine. me being a 14 year old girl dating a 18 year boy. ya my mom dosent know and will never know. what is really the difference i mean when i am 22 he will be 26 so what is my mom going to have a cow if i marry a guy that is 4 years older? both of us have the same expirence, and we both want a relationship. we both don't want sex right now. which is what every one has a cow about. all he wants is sex. no he dosent. so i think its fine for a 14 year old to date a 18 year old. if you don't like my answer or you want more advive about love, dating, and relationship questions just e-mail me at soccer1993girl@hotmail.com

Of course. It depends on you. You are allowed if your parents tell you so.

Many people would think it is acceptable to date someone two years older but it may become a problem in some states once he becomes 18 and you are just 16.

You have to be 18 to move out and live on your own legally. If its okay with your parents, you can go to court, and legally become an adult at 16 or 17 depending on where you live.
