rabbits can get hot easily if you have them in your cage or hutch. rabbits cool themselves down by letting heat out through their ears. the best thing you can do to keep your bunny cool when its warmer out is to freeze bottles of water and put them inside the cage. your rabbit will sit next to it and cool down =] Rabbits do not sweat or pant to cool themselves, their cooling system is in their ears. The blood runs through the large veins in their ears and cools down. An ice bottle will help them cool down, so will a fan circulating the air in your rabbitry. This fan SHOULD NOT blow directly on the rabbit but circulate air either above or below the cage.

When it gets hot out, rabbit owners must take care to keep their rabbits cool:
- Turn on the air conditioning
- Chill ceramic tiles, marble slabs, or water bottles in the freezer and give them to the rabbit to lie on or beside
- Open windows and/or positioning the rabbit's habitat to allow for air flow, breezes
- Make sure the rabbit has access to shade
- Make sure the rabbit is drinking plenty of water; an ice cube in the water might be appreciated; some rabbits prefer a bowl over a bottle
- Mist the rabbit's ears with cool water
- Fans don't actually do much for rabbits on their own, and it's not good to direct the fan right at the rabbit; if you direct the fan at a wet towel draped over the rabbit's cage, or at a big jug of ice in the cage, that can cool the air close to the rabbit as it evaporates
If heat stroke sets in, the rabbit must be brought to a vet immediately, do not delay! Soak small cloths in cool water and place them on the rabbit's ears until the vet takes over. Do NOT immerse or soak the rabbit in cold water: this causes the blood vessels to narrow and actually prevent heat from escaping the body. Symptoms of heat stroke can include:
- Laboured breathing, flared nostrils
- Lethargic, inability to move, listlessness
- Convulsions
