Can you take amoxicillin and metronidazole together while breast feeding?

Plain Amoxicillin is listed as a category B. This means Animal reproduction studies have failed to show a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate or well controlled studies in pregnant women. It also says it does cross the placenta and is distributed in breast milk in small amounts. It could possibly cause harm. You should consult a medical professional before taking any medications while breastfeeding.

Amoxycillin, which is a form of Penicillin, is often prescribed for pregnant women, and has not been known to cause harm to the unborn baby, and is generally safe for nursing mothers to take, as well. However, since small amounts do pass into the mother's milk, it can cause the infant some of the same side effects as it does adults, including, but not limited to, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, and allergic reaction.

If you are taking this medication while nursing your baby, make sure your doctor knows you are breast feeding before he prescribes it, and contact your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms in your baby, especially signs of an allergic reaction (anaphalaxis).
