last guy: No THC is THC, the chemical found in marijuana. An opiate is a form of herion such as morphine or Oxycontin.

pip313: Technically it is a opioid because it has activity at opiate receptors, demerol is an "opioid" because it is fully synthetic with no structural simularity to anything the poppy plant produces. No one questions demeral being an opioid THC has the same quality's (again activity at the opiate receptors , at least the mu receptor)

Noop.

But since both are made by plants, it could be possible with genetic engineering to splice a marijuana gene(s) that make THC into an opium poppy plant and create a plant that does.

Alternatively, it might be easier to insert the opium poppy's gene(s) for making the chemicals found in opium into a marijuana plant. I don't believe anyone is actively researching such things.

It might even be possible to splice those genes into a corn plant (or any plant) and have that create illegal chemicals.

Cannabis is a plant genus. THC is the chemical compound in the cannabis plant that causes affect. The following is a quote from the e Notes Encyclopedia of Drugs and Addictive Substances.

Scientists differ on how to classify the drug: Is it a hallucinogen like LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), a narcotic like opium, or does it belong in a class by itself? (Entries on LSD and opium are included in this encyclopedia.) To further confuse matters, some scientists call marijuana a stimulant, or a substance that makes the brain and body more active, and some call it a depressant, or a substance that slows down brain and body processes.

Short answer no.

No. I believe that most adults and even a lot of kids know that THC is the chemical compound in pot that makes one high, but since THC is not an opiate, a person who has used only marijuana will not test positive for opiates.

However, testing someone only for marijuana is very rare because the cost of testing someone for just marijuana and for marijuana plus all of the most common abused drugs is either the same or only slightly more expensive depending on the testing method used.

I enjoy answering people's questions, but I also like to help people if I can. The reason that someone asked their question is none of my business, however I can often read between the lines of a question, although I'm sure that I'm not always correct.

In this case, I would like to add something to my answer: For anyone concerned about "passing" a drug test, the nearly surefire way to do so is not to use any illegal drugs or any prescription drugs that aren't theirs. It is highly unlikely that a potential employer or the military or a school (in the case of student athletes) is only going to test subjects for one drug that shouldn't be in their bodies regardless of what they might have told someone. Even though several states have legalized marijuana, all prospective employees who wish to use it should check that employer's policy on marijuana use before smoking any. The reason is because a company, or just about any organization, is free to discriminate against people who use marijuana. And one will fail if they try to use the analogy of alcohol, and that's because alcohol doesn't remain in one's system very long while THC stays in one's system at least hundreds of times longer. The best policy for people to follow, and this is only my opinion, is to only use OTC drugs as directed and drugs for which you have a prescription, not including marijuana unless you know the respective organization's policies.

No, it contains cannabinoid compounds, which interact with a separate receptor system to opioid compounds.
