Mercury is not actually a dead planet, per se, it is actually alive. Just check out this article on Mercury:
Go to Seeker.com and search for the term, "Wierd Landscape shows that Mercury's no 'Dead" Planet
No known life on Mercury, but given there are now confirmed billions of tonnes of water ice locked up in the poles. The planet itself is subjected to tidal forces of the Sun. Put the two together and there are real possibilities that underneath the ice there may be small areas of liquid water around geothermal vents.
On Earth such environments are teeming with life with the food-chain totally independent of any requirement of light. Of course you also need organic materials to be present, but fortunately we have found them too on Mercury.
All considered there are possibilities for life on Mercury, but it's still considerably more hostile than Earth. If you are looking for life outside of Earth and within our solar system there are better places to look (such as under the surface of Europa, wherever liquid water is found on Mars, and possibly even a possible butter zone in the upper atmosphere of Venus).
For the purposes of human habitation: no.
There is almost no atmosphere, making it impossible to breathe. Even with a breathing apparatus, no human could withstand the lack of air pressure without a spacesuit.
The nearness to the sun and lack of an atmosphere causes unbearable temperatures - both hot and cold. The temperature is above 400 degrees Centigrade at day, and below -150 degrees Centigrade at night.
