A proper noun is the name or title of a specific person, place, or thing. When the noun 'mother' is the title of a specific person, such as your mother or Mother Teresa, it is a proper noun and it is capitalized.

The noun 'mother' is a common noun as a general word for the female parent of anyone or anything. A common noun is capitalized only when it's the first word in a sentence.

If it substitutes for a name, it is capitalized; if it is just a common noun, it is not capitalized. For example, "Mother never let me watch scary movies" refers to the speaker's mother by the name he calls her. But "My mother never let me watch scary movies" does not use "Mother" as a name.

No. As much as you may love her, the word "mother" is a common noun. Of course, you do capitalize if it begins a sentence: Mother called to her children to come home for dinner. Or you capitalize if it is part of a title: the nun who runs a convent is called a Mother Superior, so... I spoke with Mother Mary Elizabeth. Otherwise, no. Although Alice moved away, she still misses her mother and hopes to visit her very soon.

As the word can be used in several ways there are several answers:

  • As a common noun (His mom was dead)
  • As a title or substitute for a name (I asked Mom for a cookie)
  • As the first word in a sentence (Mom said she was cooking)
  • If used as an acronym it is written in all capitals ( MOM is Singapore's Ministry of Manpower)

It depends on the context. If it takes the place of someone's name, then yes. If it's preceded by an article or possessive, then no.

Go ask Mother.

Go ask his mother.

It depends.

If mom is used like this then no: My mom is the best.

If mom is used like this then yes: "Mom, can you get me a snack."
