Is morphine sulfate like Oxycontin

Oxycontin is a synthetic manufactured MS. I have taken both for a condition I have. I will say I stay in reality much more with the MS. The oxy changed my personality, I am told not to the best. I think the pain relief is about the same. Tolerance is always a problem. The best thing is to STOP, I truly believe now that I have my pain is no worse. Now if you are taking them for other reasons than pain, then well....

They are both strong narcotic pain relievers. Hydromorphone is generic for Dilaudid which is 5 to 10 times stronger than morphine. Although in most cases it works better in liquid form than pill form. That is just on average as everyone is different. Morphine sulfate is time released morphine. They are both very good pain relievers and controlled substances. I have taken both. Was on dilaudid for 7 months until a recent shortage so they switched me to the morphine sulfate. I have severe chronic pain and both have helped me cope and live a pretty normal life. This is my second month on the morphine sulfate and I feel great. Hope this helps.

Morphine Sulfate is basically Morphine Base + Sulfuric Acid. This is called "salting"

Making a morphine salt makes it more water soluble (for injections).

Because you are adding weight (sulfate) to morphine (base), the weight of Morphine Sulfate will have less morphine (base) in it.

For example: 20mg of morphine sulfate has ~15mg of morphine (the other 5mg are due to sulfate molecule and 5 water molecules). This is called the base equivalency. For Morphine Sulfate, it has a base equivalency of ~76%.

Yes, the liquid is just easier for people to take who can't swallow pills. Or sometimes the liquid is prescribed to be used intravenously (shooting up with a needle.) The only people I have seen get the liquid though are people with a terminal illness (cancer, leukemia).
