Yes, natural gas is dangerous to the environment.

Natural gas, or methane, is a greenhouse gas twenty-one times more powerful than carbon dioxide. It gets into the atmosphere for cattle belching, from anaerobic (that is, no oxygen) decomposition of organic material, and it released from thawing tundra and lake beds as the earth warms. If it is burnt, it releases carbon dioxide.

There is a normal small amount of methane in the atmosphere, but any increase, as is happening with the melting permafrost etc, is adding to the accelerated greenhouse effect in the atmosphere which is causing global warming.
