Microwave ovens can work for decades. They can fail for a variety of reasons related to malfunctions in the electronics, but they are generally pretty tough. But that doesn't mean they can be roughed up. Avoid slamming the door. Don't use metal inside unless the manufacturer's directions permit it. Cover all items that can possibly splatter. Keep the cavity clean. Food thrown around the cavity can continue to cook even if it's stuck to the inside, and, though the cavity is steel, the door most likely isn't. The door and the window are vulnerable to damage from shock (slamming the door) and from heated food that can melt portions of the assembly. The door shuts to press against the front of the cavity and form a microwave seal by virtue of the spacing. If damaged by stress or heat, there might be a problem. Microwave leakage is undesirable for exactly the reason you think it is. Direct any questions or doubts at a local appliance person. Phone calls are pretty cheap if not actually free. That's within the budget of most people.

I'd say that it's fine as long as it is in good condition and the door seal is not ripped and fits properly..

My Frigidaire microwave oven is 6 yrs. old. It stopped working. The electrical outlet is good because I plugged the blender and it works. Would the microwave oven be too old?

Best cookware for cooking in a microwave?

Examine the packaging to be sure, but all stainless and cast-iron cookware are oven and broiler safe. Non-stick cookware is safe up to about 450 degrees F. But the non-stick coating can begin to melt at that point. So don't put it under the broiler. This rule holds true for just about any brand with one exception. Calphalon Infused Anodized cookware does not have a traditional nonstick coating and is oven safe up to the melting point of aluminum according to Calphalon's website.

Are pots and pans microwave safe?

In general, non-microwave-safe cookware is non-microwave-safe not because of any toxic compounds or fumes the cookware may emit during cooking, but because the material used to make the pot cannot withstand the high temperatures caused by the microwaves. If you've ever microwaved an antique dish or plate, for example, you know it can get really hot. Over time, this weakens many pieces, and the piece (bowl, cup, plate, whatever) will crack sooner than if you'd not used it in the microwave. Plus, it'll burn you when you take it out of the microwave. In addition, dishware with metallic trim (gold or platinum) can emit sparks in the trim area, which is not good for both the plate and the microwave oven itself.

Why do you put plastic in microwave ovens?

The Reason for these is because Some Plastic Can Not Stand the heat that The MicroWave Oven melt produce therefore when you put a unstsble Plastic in the Microwave oven it Will meltAnother Response:Certain types of plastic may be recommended for use in microwave ovens because they allow the microwaves to pass through them. In this way the food inside the plastic container is cooked while the container stays cool. Not all plastics are microwave safe; some will melt. Metal cannot be used in microwaves. Some types of ceramic dishes, which may have metal elements in their glaze, are not safe in microwave ovens. Consequently some companies such as Tupperware, Rubbermaid and Pampered Chef produced lines of plastic cookware specifically for microwave ovens.More recently, studies suggest that molecular particles from some types of plastic migrate into food when heated in microwave ovens. While manufacturers maintain that their products are safe, some medical experts advise using only glass or safe ceramic cookware in microwave ovens.

What cookware is safe to use with a microwave?

Do not! put a metal container or anything with even the slightest bit of metal on it in the microwave! you also don't want to put thin plastics in the microwave because they tend to melt. if you do use any kind of plastic your best bet is to only use the plastic that says"microwave safe" or "oven safe". You don't want to use the wrong kind of container when using the microwave. It could be dangerous. Microwave safe materials include glass, ceramics, paper products, and wax paper.

Can you put paper plates in the microwave?

Not safely, according to http://sneakykitchen.com/Ten_commandments/microwave_safety.htm "All paper products are manufactured with chemicals. Never use grocery bags, paper plates, newspapers, butcher's wrap or other paper items to heat food. The microwave can cause chemicals in these products to transfer into your food. Use white paper towels only if the label states they are microwave safe. Wax paper, parchment paper and oven cooking bags are safe to use. Don't overheat!" However, according to the USDA most paper plates should actually be safe to use http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FactSheets/Microwave_Ovens_and_Food_Safety/index.asp#11 "What containers and wraps are safe to use in the microwave oven?Only use cookware that is specially manufactured for use in the microwave oven. Glass, ceramic containers, and all plastics that are safe to use usually will be labeled for microwave oven use."SAFE TO USE: * Any utensil labeled for microwave use. * Heatproof glass (such as Pyrex, Anchor Hocking, etc.). * Glass-ceramic (such as Corning Ware). * Oven cooking bags. * Baskets (straw and wood) for quick warm-ups of rolls or bread. Line the basket with napkins to absorb moisture from food. * Most paper plates, towels, napkins and bags. For optimal safety use white, unprinted materials. * Wax paper, parchment paper, heavy plastic wrap. Do not allow plastic wrap to touch food; vent it to allow a steam escape. * Heat-susceptor packaging. "
