While for most of his "career" he is portrayed as a civilian sailor, when in the military (ignoring the one "In the Army Now" episode), he was in the Coast Guard (source: Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves he was stationed at a Coast Guard small boat station). Much of the confusion can be caused by two facts:
1) During times of war (eg WWII ) the Coast Guard is transferred to the Department of the Navy. So although he was still a Coastie, he could have been serving on a Navy Ship. (Even today it is not uncommon to find a Coast Guard team serving on a Navy Ship.)
2) During the WWII era, the Coast Guard uniform and the Navy uniform were almost identical, with the minor differences being too small to show in a comic strip. Even today most of the formal uniforms of the two services are identical except for the design on the buttons.

In the movie "G.I. Jane," the medal at the end is the Navy Cross. The Navy Cross is the second highest military decoration for valor that can be awarded to a member of the United States Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. It is awarded for extraordinary heroism in combat or for actions that are above and beyond the call of duty. In the film, the protagonist, Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil, is awarded the Navy Cross for her exceptional bravery and leadership during a dangerous mission.
At the market in downtown New Orleans. Was there while they were filming it!
Popeye the Sailor Man's favorite color is often depicted as a shade of navy blue, which reflects his sailor persona. Additionally, he is frequently associated with the color green due to his love for spinach, which gives him strength. However, the iconic blue sailor suit he wears is the most recognizable aspect of his color preference.
No, the equal rank in the Navy or Coast Guard is a Captain.
Yes.
Not sure but I would think the NAVY
The United States Coast Guard is one of the seven major divisions of the United States Armed Forces. The Coast Guard used to be a division of the Navy.

Not while they are members of the US Coast Guard. Only US Navy personnel can apply to be SEALS. The selection program is quite competitive.
He was a sailor in the NavyI'm afraid that that is a commonly-heldmis-conception. He was in the USCG--the US Coast Guard.

No. There is a single Coast Guard JROTC programme, but no collegiate level ROTC programmes. You can receive a commission in the Coast Guard through Navy ROTC, the United States Coast Guard Academy, or you can apply for a direct commission to the Coast Guard from the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
O3 in the Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force; O6 is the Navy and Coast Guard (a Navy and Coast Guard Captain is equivalent to an Army/Marine Corps/Air Force Colonel).
1. The Army - The Department of US Army2. The Air Force - The Department of US Air Force3. The Navy - The Department of Navy4. The Marines - The Department of Navy, Office of the USMC5. The Coast Guard - The US Coast Guard, Department of Homeland SecuritySome argue that the National Guard is also a branch of the US Military, however unless they are deployed, the National Guard is a part of each state's executive branch. This in no way minimizes the mission they perform.
