This varies, but in the United States, high schools and most undergraduate colleges will use an "A" to represent excellence. This grade is given to a student who has demonstrated mastery of the course material, and it is the highest grade. (Some schools might give an "A Plus" but many just stop at an "A.")

A "B" represents solid and very good achievement in the course, although not at the level of the "A" student. And a "C" represents acceptable or satisfactory; it is a passing grade but shows a need for improvement. Nothing below a "C" would be considered proficient, and in many schools, nothing below a B Minus is considered proficient. (And in many graduate school, "C" grades are not considered passing.)
