All rusting is oxidation, but not all oxidation is rusting. When iron rusts, FeO (iron oxide) is formed. Carbon can be oxidized forming CO2. Hydrogen can be oxidized forming water, H2O. Oxygen readily combines with lots and lots of things.

Iron is a metal and an element found on the Periodic Table.

Steel is a common name for many combinations of Iron, Carbon and other elements such as manganese, chromium, vanadium, and tungsten. These other elements are added to control the hardness of the material and control many other characteristics of the metal overall, melting point, ductility, etc. Visit Industrial Interface below to help with other engineering design problems.

Iron is an element on the Periodic table of elements denoted as Fe. Rust is Iron that has been Oxidized, meaning that an oxidizing agent (most likely the oxygen in the atmosphere) stole two of its valance electrons and you now have Fe+2

Technically, it's iron oxide hydrate, because pure iron oxide isn't rust. Rust forms when iron or its alloys are exposed to moist air. The oxygen and water in the air react with the metal to form the hydrated oxide. The familiar red form of rust is (Fe 2 O 3), but iron has other oxidation states, so it can form other colors of rust.

Rust is iron oxide. This occurs when iron reacts with oxygen ang usually water (this is why we paint/oil iron , so that oxygen cannot reach the metal)

No, iron is an element that exists as a silvery grayish metal.

Rust is a brittle red substance composed of iron compounds, such as iron III oxide, containing Fe3+ ions.
