In fact, salt water is a solution because salt dissolves in water. A mixture is a mix of substances that can be separated by physical means. Saltwater can be separated by boiling away the water and leaving the salt behind, but because the salt dissolves in water, it is a solution. There are two parts to a solution. The solute and the solvent. The solute is the substance that is dissolved in the solvent. The solute is usually smaller than the solvent. A compound is a substance in which two or more atoms are joined in a chemical reaction. The resalting substance has properties different than those of the starting substances.

Salt and water are both chemical compounds. (Each one is a chemical compound.) When we get them together to make salt water, we create a solution. In that solution, the salt (the solute) "disappears" into the water (the solvent) to create the solution.

A solution is not a mixture. Use the links below for more information.

Not according to my textbook. It defines SOLUTION as a homogeneous MIXTURE of two or more substances that is visually uniform throughout.

MIXTURE - MATTER CONSISTING OF TWO OR MORE PURE SUBSTANCES IN VARYING PROPORTIONS.

pure substance - an element or a compound.

So, I'm saying Salt water is a mixture. It looks homogeneous to me.

But, then again, my textbook is crap, so take this with a grain of salt ;-).
