Singing isn't necessarily good for you, as there isn't much of a benefit from it. It can be bad, however, if you don't sing carefully. Singing too long, straining your voice, screaming, etc. can all be very harmful to your vocal chords.

While singing itself is not very helpful for your voice, the process of improving your singing most certainly is. Learning how to sing takes much practice, which can teach you discipline. The warm-ups you do for singing help you stretch out your vocal chords as well, which makes it less likely that you'll strain them afterwards, even when you're just talking.
