Depending on the size and depth of the collapsed area, a sinkhole could be fatal for those people that are residing in structures directly above the area which is collapsing, or for those that are standing, walking, or riding over said area, or for those that are unaware of or unable to stop when approaching the collapsed area in a vehicle.

See link for photo and story of unusual sinkhole resulting in deaths.

A sinkhole is often caused when underground water channels dry up, causing a shift in the earth above the channel void. Sinkhole hazards include:

  • injury or death to persons
  • heartache from loss of personal property
  • real estate property damage (the land)
  • real estate property damage (the structures: houses and businesses)
  • loss of vehicles and therefore, personal or public transportation
  • infrastructures in townships, towns, cities (the roads, overhead wires and poles, underground pipes for water, gas and sewage)
  • continuing shifts in surrounding land
  • loss of use of property - it's one thing to fill a pothole but quite impossible to fill back in a sinkhole
  • unseen danger to anyone on the surface at the time a sinkhole opens
  • disruption to countless lives / persons
  • expense to local governments to re-establish a safe area and to keep out onlookers from a new sinkhole

About the only people who might benefit from a sinkhole are the geologists and engineers who study them.
