That depends on who you ask. And there is a great amount of debate about it's importance. So what you will be getting is my opinion and not a fact.
I believe space exploration to be crucial to the continued existence of the human race.
There are many things that can wipe our civilization out in the blink of an eye, without human having any warning at all. Gamma Ray Burts, comments, asteroids, diseases, and countless other things that I won't even mention. And as much as we take it for granted....life seems to be the exception to all the rules of the universe and not the norm.
Even if our civilization continues on for billions of years from now, we will still have the inevitable end of our sun running out of fuel becoming a red giant and consuming our planet in it's final death throws.
If humans do not find a way to explore AND colonize space, then eventually the odds will catch up with our very distant decendants, and earth will be destoryed somehow.
By developing technology to travel and explore space, and eventually colonize it, we increase that chance that even though our planet will someday no longer exist, that the human race will continue to exist elsewhere in the universe.
That is why I believe space exploration to be important. But that's just the opinion of 1 man.
