It is most popular in south Korea where it is played as a pro sport. However Starcraft II has been becoming popular in other countries as well
Starcraft is considered an e-sport by some people, thus maybe considered a sport. There are no doubt parallels between the e-sports and "actual" sports. Both draw crowds to watch high level play. Both draw advertisements. Both are very competitive and have teams.
Possible yes. Starcraft is a big thing in South Korea, sometimes even called a sport. There are many big tournaments over there and even professional gamers who are payed to play the game!
StarCraft happened in 1998.

First off, you can play Starcraft by downloading the torrents. If you have a friend who has Starcraft, upload his number then you can download free, legal copies of Starcraft (10 spawns from a single CD).
Although I haven't played Starcraft 2 before, I'm assuming it will be nice, considering Starcraft 1.
South Korean starcraft and American starcraft is EXACTLY the same. The games hold no differences what so ever.
Warcraft/Starcraft is coolest.
