The Sun is a star. When we see the Sun (NEVER look directly at the Sun), what we see is light coming from the Sun itself. When we see a planet or a moon (LOOK at planets - they are fascinating!) what we see is the Sun's light reflected off the surface of the planet/moon.

The other stars that you see in the night sky are suns themselves, some smaller, some larger, and some very similar to our own Sun. They look (even the really huge ones!) so little because they are so impossibly far away.

I'll leave what was here because it is commonly accepted, but in fact, the sun cannot be a star because the definition of the word star is: a celestial body of hot gases that radiates energy derived from thermonuclear reactions in the interior. The sun is not actually made of gases as some people may think, but an uncommon state of matter called plasma. Plasma is even higher up in thermal energy than gases are so that makes it different from gases. Just wanted to let you know because the other answer is so commonly accepted.

It depends on your definition of 'sun'. If you meant it as 'a star which has a planetary system', then some stars are suns.
