Magellan is an established makers of GPS systems and they have many models that offers many features. For your girlfriend I would recommend the Maestro 3210 series. It is basic but very user friendly and functional.
The two best types of GPS are the Garmin and the TomTom. I would go with the Garmin because it will last longer and take more falls, but the TomTom is usually just as good and more user friendly.
