It is not strictly Protestant. It is essentially Catholic, but not Roman Catholic as it does not recognise the Pope as the leader of the "universal church".

The Church of Ireland is self governing, and although part of the Anglican Communion, the Church of England (Protestant) has no governance over Ireland.
