The apex of the heart is inferior to the rest of the heart. The base is superior to the rest of the heart.
The superior vena cava brings blood back from the upper part of the body. The inferior vena cava drains the rest of the body.
The left ventricle forms the apex of the heart.
Blood enters the right atria from the superior and inferior vena cava. Then it flows down into the right ventricle. Then to the lungs. Back to the left atria. Down into the left ventricle and out the the rest of the body.

With one exception, veins carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. The largest and last blood vessel they pass through is called the superior vena cava. The exception is the Pulmonary Vein, which carries oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the heart to be pumped to the rest of the body.
