it really depends on what kind of books you like. i personally thought it was amazing but the ending was phenomenal, where both dogs die, he buries them side by side on a hill, which conveniently, a red fern grows directly between them, just like the legend. i though it was so precious. which explains the title \where the red fern grows" it is pretty good, how hes trying to get money for the dogs, but later on it has some surprising events that take place, like the part when he is caught in the water and the dog saves him, i would recommend it if you like this kind of book, if it doesn't sound interesting, it probably isn't to you.
