The darkness of the new moon is caused by a sort of eclipse, but not an eclipse of something between the sun and the Earth. During a new moon, the Earth is positioned between the moon and the sun, thus shadowing the moon.

-- Take a tennis ball and a flashlight into a room at night.

-- Close the door and turn off the lights.

-- Turn on the flashlight and point it at the tennis ball.

-- Notice how 1/2 of the ball is light, and 1/2 of the ball is dark.

-- Watch the lighted 1/2 of the ball, while you pass your hand in front of the flashlight.

-- Notice how the ball turns dark when the shadow of your hand falls on it.

-- Notice how the ball becomes light again when the shadow of your hand goes away.
