Sorry, but the above is not correct. Great Danes originated in Germany and had nothing to do with Denmark. They were originally called Deutsche Dogge and German Mastiff. Originally bred for boar hunting but quickly became used to guard German royalty. That protectiveness is still part of their genetic structure. They became"Great Danes" only after a French writer accidently encountered one on Denmark. He called it a Great Dane and the name stuck.
