A person can tell the difference between diesel and petrol by the smell. Diesel is going to smell more like oil. Gasoline smells more like vinegar.

Take a sample out and check following; Colour - Petrol is almost clear, diesel is more yellowy Smell - Diesel and Petrol both have distinctively different smells, only way is if you get a sample of either as a reference Flash point - Petrol has a much lower flash point so will burn if ignited whereas diesel wont. If you take a very small sample and under safe and controlled circumstances try to ignite with a match if burns is petrol if not diesel Hope this helps

Because petrol is volatile, some of it evaporates into the air and that's what you smell.You can smell petrol at a petrol station because sometimes people spill it as they put it into their cars.
Check the fuel pump seal under the off side rear passenger seat. I had one replaced on a diesel and the seal was not seated correctly. I assume a petrol version is the same.
on the low pressure side of the fuel injection there is a rubber hose with a cloth cover that runs between the injectors, this is where you are most likely getting the leak and smell of diesel.
