∙ 12y agoYes, there is a thinning of the ozone layer which we refer to as a hole. The Ozone Layer lies in the stratosphere, 10 - 50 km altitude, and acts to prevent UV-B from reaching the Earth's surface, where it will damage life forms and their environment. Hydrocarbons containing fluorine or chlorine, the 'CFC' gases, rapidly destroy the ozone (O3) in the atmosphere, thus removing this protection. Due to atmospheric circulation processes, a hole develops in the Southern Hemisphere ozone layer, and spreads to lower latitudes. Due to the banning of CFC production round the world, this process is slowly being reversed, and the Ozone layer is being restored.
