There have been a number of holy women bearing the name of Elizabeth who have been recognized by the Church as saints. The earliest of these is Elizabeth of Zechariah, kinswoman of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the mother of Saint John the Baptist. This Saint Elizabeth is particularly remembered for her words to Mary recorded for us in Sacred Scriputre: "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled." (Luke 1:42-46) The first of these beautiful words are recited daily by Catholics all over the world in the prayer Hail Mary. Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) born of a noble family and the wife of a nobleman, was renowned for her charity and humility. After the death of her husband, she devoted herself to the care of the sick poor, and died at the age of twenty-four. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774-1821) was born into a wealthy Episcopalian family in New York City, married, had children, and entered the Catholic Church. After her husband's death, Saint Elizabeth Seton founded a congregation of religious sisters called the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph. Other saints bearing the name Elizabeth include Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, Saint Elizabeth of Schonau, and Saint Elizabeth the Martyr (who is believed to have died in the second or third century, AD.)
