Strictly speaking, it's probably not a cog, but a sprocket, if it meshes with the chain.
And how to remove it depends on the design, there are a few different to choose from. Might even be that you're looking at something called a freewheel. If that's the case, what you need is the appropriate freewheel puller.

∙ 12y agoNo, just a regular socket wrench will allow you to remove the cranks from the bottom bracket. Or an Allen wrench depending on the type of crank bolt.
You will need a special tool to remove the bottom bracket though.

Some take a 15 mm open ended wrench, others use an Allen key.
Remember that the left pedal unscrews clockwise.

Most chevys have a horseshoe shaped clip on the window crank. There is a special tool to remove it , but I just push them off with a small screw driver, or hook the back with a dental tool
